What do I need before I start?

You must have a valid, signed, provisional driving licence.

You’ll need the photocard and paper counterparts of your licence. You must have eyesight to the required standard i.e. you must be able to read a new style number plate from a distance of 20 metres in good daylight. If you need glasses or contact lenses to do this, you must wear them at all times when driving.

How many lessons will I need?

It will depend upon how fast you learn. According to DSA statistics, a typical average is 45 hours professional instruction, together with 22 hours of private practice. Regular lessons are essential. JAMESLEARNTODRIVE  is committed to training learner drivers to the highest standards of safety and competence, without asking you to take any more lessons than you need to demonstrate the ability to safely pass your driving test.

Can I have my driving lesson at the weekend or late evening?

Weekend lessons are available as are evening lessons with the last lesson starting as late as 9pm.

Why do you recommend one and half hour driving lessons and do I have to do them for one and half hours?

One and half hour lessons can lead to a reduction in the total number of hours being taken by up by a student. It’s simply a more efficient use of the students time as less time is spent recapping the previous lesson.

Some new students cannot manage two hours and some more advanced students want more than an hour so we find one and half hours more productive and efficient all round. If need be, we can accommodate one or two hour lessons.

Do you offer discounts?

Yes, we offer discounts. Please email me at jameslearntodrive@msn.com with details of your request.

Can I begin my driving lesson at home and finish at school or work?

Yes, subject to reasonable mileage and travel time restrictions and depending on where the instructors next student lives.

 Do you provide intensive courses?

Subject to availability of a driving instructor, we can offer intensive driving courses from 6 to 40 hours per week. Please email us with your requests.

Will I have to share the car with another pupil?

No, unless specifically requested by a student or unless it is first ok’d with the student. If the student is not happy with anything, we won’t do it. We believe driving lessons should be on a one-to-one basis, so you receive the undivided attention of your instructor.

Can you help me prepare for my theory and hazard perception tests?

There are several self help cd rom discs available to help you on your way. However, you will also learn driving theory and hazard perception along with anticipation in your practical driving lessons with your instructor.

Do you guarantee a pass?

No reputable driving school will ‘guarantee’ a pass as it is not possible to do so. Driving tests are conducted by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), an executive agency of the government, not driving schools.

How long do I need to wait for my theory test result?

Not long. You will receive the result of your test within a few minutes of completing it in the office where you take the test.

When can I book my practical driving test?

Before you can book your practical driving test you must first pass your theory test. Your driving instructor will then advise you when your driving has reached the standard required in order to pass your practical test. A mock practical driving test is recommended before sitting your test for real.

In what car do I take my driving test?

It always good practice to take your driving test in your instructor’s car as for this would be the car that they are most familiar with.

With jameslearntodive you will receive a one hour lesson with your instructor immediately prior to your test. This will include all the ‘show me, tell me’ questions so you are familiar with the car thouroughly.

Having said that, you may take the test in your own car if you prefer, as long as it has proper seat belts a head restraint and a rear view mirror for the examiner.

Do I have to drive perfectly to pass my driving test?

No, you do not need to produce a ‘perfect’ drive. However you will be expected to give a safe, confident, courteous and responsible demonstration of driving in accordance with the rules of the road. You must also be able to competently perform set manoeuvres such as turning the car around in the road or reversing around a corner. In addition you will be required to answer two questions about basic vehicle safety checks, all of which we will help you with and train you to complete with confidence.

I’ve passed my driving test, what is Pass Plus?

The Pass Plus course is designed to provide valuable additional experience with help of a qualified professional driving instructor. The course comprises six modules including motorway driving, night driving, driving on country roads, town driving, dual carriageways and driving in adverse weather. You’ll learn a careful but not hessitant, progressive but not aggressive enjoyable driving style that can reduce your chance of being involved in an accident as well as reducing your insurance premiums –sometimes up to 35%. There’s also a £70 refund from Transport for London (Subject to conditions) so you have nothing to lose! And there is no test to take, just education from a professional.

Do you offer motorway lessons?

Yes.

As a provisional license holder, leaner drivers are currently forbidden from driving on motorways by law.

At Jameslearntodrive we feel motorway driving skills are essential for today’s drivers.

We also feel that due to the high speeds involved in learning to drive on motorways, ‘trial and error’ is not a safe option so it’s best to get professional training.

Do you offer lessons for people to just brush up their skills?

Yes.  Refresher lessons can help in several ways. Perhaps, despite being a qualified driver, you have not driven for some time or simply want to brush up your general skills or on your parking or reversing skills.  Refresher lessons can also help rebuild your confidence..
